Marcie Got A Christmas Gift
March 18, 2010
Marcie Brown joined Labrador City Fire Rescue in September 2000 and in that time has proven herself to be a competent and dedicated firefighter. It was during the past Christmas season that Brown received her best Christmas gift ever, a very special recognition of her contributions to the Department and the residents of Labrador City.

Brown's passion with the Department is fire prevention and has on many occasions been involved in events such as Fire Prevention Week, Mall displays and the Learn Not To Burn Program.

During the 2008 Fire Prevention Week, the Department had a display at the Labrador Mall. Shaun Hewlett knowing the interest that Matthew, his two and a half year old son had in fire trucks, went home and brought him to the mall. When they got there, the Department had closed up the display and had gone back to the station. While later passing by the fire station, Hewlett decided to drop in and see if he could get a kid's fire hat for Matthew.

When they entered the station, Brown got the kids fire gear, put it on Matthew and took some pictures of him on the trucks. With that, Matthew was in his glee and he never forgot "Firefighter Marcie"

Shaun explained that Matthew has always had an interest in heavy equipment and trucks, especially fire trucks. Many times after hearing trucks and equipment go by, he would look out to see if it was Firefighter Marcie. Brown is a heavy equipment operator with the Town.

On December 29, Matthew's mom Shauna gave birth to his baby sister. When he was asked what name they should give his new sister, his answer was quick and easy: Firefighter Marcie!

"Oh my God, this is absolutely the best Christmas gift ever!" says Brown after she heard the news that a baby is going to be named after her. "It is just so awesome and I never would have expected it."

"After all the time that I spent doing fire prevention, it is nice to know you are appreciated" she said. "I love it and it is a great feeling to know that you can help prevent someone getting hurt or have a fire".

To celebrate the news, Brown and Sparky made a visit to Matthew's home and gave him and his sister a small gift each. She gave him a T-shirt with the Maltese cross and lettering saying 'Big Brother Firefighter' while she gave a set of pajamas with the words 'Baby Sister Firefighter' to his sister.

It was on January 24th that Matthew's baby sister was Dedicated and named Marcy Leigh Hewlett. Naturally Brown was in the Church for this very special occasion.

Shaun and Shana are both very pleased that Brown and the Department made such an impression on their son who will be four in April. They are grateful for the overall experience that they have given Matthew.

As for the pictures that were taken during Matthew's visit to the station, one of them is featured in the Downhome magazine's "Kids Career Day" contest.
