LCFR READY FOR THE NEXT CALL !
The Labrador City Fire Department is a composite Department, currently having a compliment of 5 full time career firefighters as well as 36 volunteer firefighters headed by Fire Chief Mario Berthiaume. It responds to fire and rescue calls from the Wabush Narrows to the Quebec border as well as rescue calls on the Trans Labrador Highway. Members are trained and proficient in firefighting, vehicle extrication, Haz-Mat response and water rescue.
The Station is manned 24 hours a day by a career firefighter who has the responsibility of taking emergency calls and notifying the volunteer firefighters though a pager system, of the emergency. They then respond to the emergency call with the appropriate equipment. They also have further responsibilities to ensure that all the equipment required by the volunteers to do their work, is in proper working condition. All firefighters have NFPA 1001 professional qualifications. All career firefighters willingly give up their time when they are off duty to answer emergency calls as part of the 36 member volunteer group. The career firefighters are R. Hiscock, J. Albert, J. Power, D. Locke and J. Chaisson.
The 36 dedicated and well trained volunteers have consistently demonstrated their capabilities and willingness to help the residents of this northern town whenever needed. Most have either NFPA 1001 Level II or Level I professional qualifications. Several members are Haz-Mat Technicians while are trained in Haz-Mat Operations. A number are trained paramedics (EMT) with many others having extensive first aid training as well as being qualified in used of the Automatic Electronic Defibulator (A.E.D.) and administration of oxygen. Members regularly train on Monday nights with the occasional training session done on one or two weekends.
The Department is divided into four crews, usually comprising of six firefighters headed by a Captain and a Lieutenant. A Battalion consists of two crews who answer to a Battalion Chief who intern answers to the Assistant Chief and Fire Chief. Other firefighters have the additional duties of being department Training Officers, (T.O.) responsible for maintaining the training standards of the department.
